The technology subjects genuinely mobilising management teams at financial institutions in West and Central Africa have narrowed. Four workstreams appear in almost every roadmap. Here is what they imply, both organisationally and for the information system.
1. Applied artificial intelligence, on governed data
Interest has shifted from demonstrations to uses with a measurable effect: anomaly detection, scoring, decision support, automation of repetitive processing. The condition is always the same: maintained master data, monitored data quality, a data catalogue and compliance taken seriously. Without that foundation, an AI project remains a mock-up.
2. Digital identity and regulatory compliance
Remote identity verification, sanctions screening and ongoing customer risk monitoring have become permanent requirements, not one-off projects. The technical challenge is integration: connecting those checks to the onboarding journey and to the existing system, with an audit trail a regulator can actually use.
3. Hybrid cloud and control over sensitive data
Financial institutions now combine private infrastructure and cloud services according to how sensitive the processing is. That requires an architecture audit, well-mastered hyperconverged platforms, a backup and recovery strategy, and documented operations. The subject is no longer “moving to the cloud” but “splitting it correctly”.
4. Customer-journey automation
Account opening, subscription, complaint, follow-up: these journeys are still often split across several tools and picked up manually. Customer relationship management and digitisation platforms make it possible to orchestrate them end to end, with tracking of lead times and bottlenecks.
What to take away
None of these four workstreams can be handled in isolation: AI needs governed data, compliance needs integration, cloud needs architecture, automation needs documented processes. That is why we approach them as a whole, starting from your existing estate.
