Onboarding concentrates two conflicting requirements: open an account quickly, and only open an account for a properly verified person. A well-designed KYC and anti-money-laundering setup does not choose between the two: it automates routine checks and reserves human review for the cases that deserve it.
1. Verify identity remotely, beyond a scanned document
Checks cover the document (authenticity, consistency, legibility), the person (match between face and document, fraud-attempt detection) and the declared data. An incomplete file must be detected as it is being created, not three weeks later by the compliance team.
2. Screen lists and qualify risk
Sanctions, politically exposed persons, adverse media: these checks must be replayed over time, not only at account opening. The setup assigns a risk level, triggers enhanced due diligence when required and keeps a record of every decision — that traceability is what the regulator examines.
3. Integrate the checks with the existing system
Verification only has value if its result reaches the point where decisions are made: the account-opening tool, the core banking system, the customer relationship tool. Integration relies on documented application interfaces, migration of in-flight files and explicit handling of error and unavailability cases.
4. Steer the setup after go-live
A compliance setup is tuned over time: share of files accepted automatically, average processing time, volume of manual reviews, rejection reasons. These indicators make it possible to adjust thresholds without weakening control, and to explain the choices made.
Where to start
We begin with a review of the current onboarding journey: steps, tools, lead times, manual pick-up points. That review makes it possible to state precisely what can be automated, what must stay human, and in which order to proceed.
